Book description 36 circular walks - country, coastal and town - with full directions, schematic maps and background information to enable the general walker or holidaymaker to make the most of this remarkably varied and interesting region. Morbihan is the department that sits in the middle of southern Brittany. Its name, mor bihan, is Breton for ‘little sea’, a reference to the Gulf of Morbihan where hundreds of tiny islands are scattered across an area of calm water, connected to but sheltered from the Atlantic ocean. The department is well known for its neolithic remains, the most famous of which are the alignments at Carnac, and some of the walks pass lesser known but equally awe-inspiring sites. Others rely on the natural beauty of the countryside, the tranquillity of inland waterways or the everlasting fascination of the sea and coast to afford those images that make walks in Morbihan truly memorable.
Reviews (of the print version) The introduction sums up the author's enthusiasm for the subject and the book goes on to describe 36 circular walks, each of which would be considered to be quite sensational in most other parts of the world. ... The book contains particularly useful information about the menhirs that are passed on the walks. Central Brittany Journal
The cover attracted me to this book - blue sea, a castle, megaliths, rolling countryside, etc. - and I love the lay-out of walks with good photos, clear maps and directions, and links to other places in the area. There seems to be an enormous variety of walks included all over Morbihan (which is basically southern Brittany), featuring coast, country, old towns, river valleys, archaeological sites, chateaux, chapels, etc. The shortest walk is under 4kms and the longest 15kms, with the whole range in between as well. Lots of information about the places on the routes is given too, including local legends and historical background. Summaries of practical details like location, parking, level of difficulty, rough estimate of time are given at the start of each walk, plus a summary of the sights and atmosphere so you know what to expect. Just browsing the book is almost as good as getting out there and walking! I can recommend Walk 24 at Lac de Guerledan and Walk 14 around the megaliths at Erdeven, but that's just so far... there are 34 other walks in the book! Amazon review
I used this book on a recent holiday in the Gulf of Morbihan. There were loads of interesting walks to draw on, clearly explained, easy to follow, taking me to places I wouldn't have come across otherwise. I heartily recommend it if you enjoy walking. Amazon review
I live in this area and bought this book for my brother who when visiting likes walking. He and his wife came over and used it for their entire visit. He then bought a copy for my parents to use when they are over. Well recommended. One point, it does cover a large area so driving to and from walks must be taken into consideration. Amazon review
