Book Description

28 Brittany walks with maps, photos and directions, covering the departments of Finistère, Côtes d’Armor, Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine and Loire-Atlantique. The introduction gives an historical outline, an overall view of the variety and cultural background of Brittany’s footpaths and a useful glossary of relevant Breton and French vocabulary.

The walks include spectacular sections of the famous coastal path, legendary hills and forests, varied water courses and traditional countryside. The text fully describes directions and provides atmospheric accounts of places of interest on the route, such as megalithic monuments, châteaux and sacred structures with their associated legends.

Each walk begins with practical information – location, length, duration, etc. – and a detailed introduction to set the scene in terms of landscape and history. The directions are clearly explained and reinforced by a sketch map of the route. Further suggestions for walks in the same area and other places of interest in the vicinity are given at the end of each walk.

‘Walking Brittany’ was first published as ‘Holiday Walks in Brittany’ by Sigma Press in 2001.

Reviews

This guide is useful and informative for anyone who loves discovering the beauty of Brittany on foot.

France Magazine

Judy Smith’s book is much more than a collection of walks...   As a resident of Brittany, I have used the book with pleasure, enjoying walks in stunning scenery and gaining a greater understanding of my environment in the process. The directions and sketch maps are full and accurate, with details of all the sights on route, both natural and man-made. ... The book is a good read in its own right and eminently usable as a way of discovering both well-known and more secluded walking trails in an exceptional region of France.

 Amazon review

We love Brittany so much we bought a cottage and a gite! "Walking in Brittany" is a brilliant guide to delightful routes. Keen walkers and those who simply stroll will find lovely walks to explore. The maps and detailed notes are enthralling. This is a book to read by the fireside in winter and to pack into a pocket on the first day outdoors. Brittany is beautiful, historic and cultural and all of these qualities are explored in the variety of walks.
The book includes a brief guide to the Breton language and a really useful French vocabulary for walkers. We will buy another copy to leave in the gite for our guests.
